First Tuesday Bereavement Group

In November 2022, Brain Tumour Support NZ launched a new support group simply named ‘The First Tuesday Group’. The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month and caters to those bereaved from losing a loved one to a brain tumour.

The formation of such a group was seen to be a natural progression from our existing Caregiver online support groups, where it was felt that meaningful relationships had been formed and suddenly there was nothing in place once their loved one had died. This seemed counter intuitive given Brain Tumour Support NZ’s commitment to following the whānau along their brain tumour journey - a journey that continues for whānau well beyond their loss.

Largely participant led, this group is a safe space to share unique stories and experiences with others who understand. A place where tears and laughter go hand in hand. Remembering their loved one and honouring the journey they have shared together. Participants in the group are all in different stages of loss - some are historic and some are more recent. This offers both parties comfort and reassurance and provides a space where growth, compassion and understanding can be fostered.

The nature of the group allows participants to come and go as they please. We understand that some days can be more difficult than others and there is no expectation to attend. The purpose of the group is for people to know that they are not alone. It is a place which is safe, free of judgement and where you can come to share your feelings with people who understand.
